MORE INFORMATION

In medieval legends a "stone of the sun" is reported which seems to have allowed the Vikings to orient themselves with respect to the position of the sun even with fog or overcast skies during their long journeys at sea. A Danish archaeologist, Thorkild Ramskou, hypothesized in 1967 that it could be crystals with pleochroism , able to highlight the polarization of sunlight that occurs in the atmosphere, invisible to the naked eye. According to this hypothesis, it could be precisely cordierite , quite common in the form of pebbles on the Norwegian coasts. There cordierite it is a mineral, more precisely a cyclosilicate of aluminum, iron and magnesium. Cordierite was named in honor of the French geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier (1777 - 1861). It is known for the very obvious pleochroism , that is, a change of color depending on the direction from which it is illuminated, so much so that it is called dichroite ("two colors", in ancient Greek). When he shows up as gem , blue-purple in color, is called Iolite.

Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz containing inclusions of crocidolite , a mineral belonging to the asbestos group. The presence of these isooriented fibers, yellow in color tending to gold, gives the mass a particular effect called chalking . It is mainly used as a gem for jewelry making usually cabochon cut. The mineral comes mainly from South Africa and is appreciated for its particularity.

Agate (from the ancient Greek : χάτης , achátes ) is a variety of chalcedony , a generic name given to quartz , when it occurs in compact masses of microcrystalline silica with a fibrous-oriented texture. Agate has a typical zoned structure which is visible even to the naked eye, thanks to the diversity of color.

Agate is formed by rhythmic deposition of silica , usually within amygdalar cavities of basaltic rocks, or petrified (agatized) woods.

When the agate is presented in flat and parallel bands, of a contrasting color (light / dark), it takes the name of onyx (from the Greek νυξ, ónyx , nail, due to its translucent appearance). Taking advantage of the layers of contrasting color (generally two but, exceptionally, up to five), onyx is used in the glyptic to make cameos .

Depending on the colors of the bands, there are different denominations:

  • brown base layer: sardonyx;
  • red base layer: onyx-carnelian.

Opal is an amorphous colloidal mineral , consisting of hydrated silica : ( SiO 2 colors, often with iridescence.The color varies from transparent to milky white, with an infinity of different intermediates (green, red, yellow, brown, black). The water content can reach up to 20%. The formation of the opal takes place through the slow geological deposit of a colloidal silica gel at a low temperature.

The word "opal" has a common root in the Sanskrit ùpala , in the Greek πάλλιος opallios and in the Latin opălus (meaning "precious stone").

97% of world opal production is in Australia , the country that made it the national stone, especially in the Lightning Ridge area, where black opal is mined. Important deposits are also located in Mexico and Ethiopia .

Jade is a mineralogically hard stone belonging to silicates . The name of jade usually indicates nephrite, a silicate of calcium and magnesium , and jadeite , a silicate of sodium and aluminum. Nephritis is found in East Turkestan and Siberia , in the area of Lake Baikal ; while jadeite comes from Burma and reaches China through the provinces of Yunnan and Guangdong only in the second half of the 18th century. The wide range of colors is due to small and different quantities of different metal oxides such as iron , chromium and manganese . The colors can vary from green to milky white, from brown to dark gray, from yellow to black. Siberian nephrite is dark green with small black spots, while jadeite is purer and more vivid due to the presence of chromium .
