Amazonite (also called "Amazon stone") is a mineral , a green variety of microcline feldspar .
The name derives from the Amazon River , in which the green stones were found specifically in the selva of Peru , but it is unlikely that there could be deposits of green feldspar in the Amazonian plain. More likely their presence on the river bed is due to the fluvial transport from the mountain deposits of origin.
According to Strabo and Pliny the Elder, the ancient Garamante people of the Sahara mined amazonite in the Tibesti Mountains.
Amazonite is a rare mineral. It is mined almost entirely from the Miass area in the Ilmen Mountains , 80 kilometers southwest of Chelyabinsk , Russia , within granite rocks. Recently, higher grade crystals have been found in the Pike's Peak area, Colorado , in association with quartz , orthoclase , and albite crystals within granites or pegmatites . Crystal Park, El Paso County, Colorado is also a known location for amazonite crystals. Amazonite has also been found within pegmatite in Madagascar and Brazil .
Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz containing inclusions of crocidolite , a mineral belonging to the asbestos group. The presence of these isooriented fibers, yellow tending towards gold, gives the mass a particular effect called chatoyancy . It is used primarily as a gemstone for jewelry making usually in cabochon cut. The mineral comes mainly from South Africa and is appreciated for its particularity.
