MORE INFORMATION
ONYX Silicea : mineralogically it is a variety of chalcedony, i.e. quartz in compact microcrystalline masses, of an opaque or semi- opaque , uniform colour, which covers red-brown tones and the entire range of grays up to black. Like all varieties of quartz it is very hard (6 to 7 on the Mohs scale) .
The Paesena stone is mainly made up of compact limestone and clay , or marly limestone, and is almost exclusively typical of Tuscany . Geologically it originated about 50 million years ago ( Eocene - Paleocene ).
The name derives from the fact that this stone hides drawings that seem to be the work of a painter, but are absolutely natural, simulating a landscape in a sometimes surprising way. Since 1500, the main extraction area has been around the city of Florence in Tuscany , where particular geological conditions have occurred.
There are no quarries or places designated for extraction and the finds are absolutely random, which determines their rarity. The peculiarity of the stone lies in the designs created by mineralized solutions in the presence of Iron and Manganese , which seem to reproduce ruined cities, stormy seas, inlets, rocks, volcanoes, mountains.
The use is purely artistic-collecting; it is cut into thin slabs then subjected to polishing. The Medici Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence has used it since 1588 . In France she was esteemed by Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin .
For quality, colors and realism, the best Paese Stone comes only from the hills around the city of Florence , so much so that it is sometimes referred to as "Florence Stone" in the world.
The Paesena Stone is striking for the chromatic contrast of its components, light gray for the limestone , reddish-brown for the iron oxides , black for the manganese and light blue for the clay .
Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz containing inclusions of crocidolite , a mineral belonging to the asbestos group. The presence of these iso-oriented fibers, yellow tending towards gold, gives the mass a particular effect called chatoyancy . It is used primarily as a gemstone for jewelry making usually in cabochon cut. The mineral comes mainly from South Africa and is appreciated for its particularity.
Jade is a mineralogically hard stone belonging to silicates . The name jade usually refers to nephrite, a calcium and magnesium silicate , and jadeite , a sodium and aluminum silicate . Nephrite is found in Eastern Turkestan and in Siberia , in the Lake Baikal area ; while jadeite comes from Burma and reaches China through the provinces of Yunnan and Guangdong only in the second half of the eighteenth century. The wide range of colors is due to small and different amounts of different metal oxides such as iron , chromium and manganese . The colors can vary from green to milky white, from brown to dark grey, from yellow to black. Siberian nephrite is dark green dotted with small black spots, while jadeite is of a purer and more vivid color due to the presence of chromium .
The agate (from the ancient greek : ἀχάτης , achátes ) is a variety of chalcedony , generic name given to quartz , when this occurs in compact masses of silica microcrystalline with fibrous-oriented texture. Agate has a typical zoned structure and is visible even to the naked eye, thanks to the diversity of colour.
Agate is formed by rhythmic deposition of silica , normally within cavities amygdalars of rocks basaltic , or petrified (agatized) woods.
When the agate is presented in flat and parallel bands, of contrasting color (light/dark), it takes the name of onyx (from the Greek ὄνυξ, onyx , nail, due to the translucent aspect). Taking advantage of the contrasting color layers (generally two but, exceptionally, up to five), onyx is used in the glyptic to realize cameos [2] .
Depending on the colors of the bands, there are different denominations:
- brown ground layer: sardonyx;
- red ground layer: onyx-carnelian.
