Jasper is a mono-mineralogical sedimentary rock, i.e. formed by a single mineral, composed of quartz, and often containing some impurities, usually iron compounds that give the rock bright colors, making it sought after as a semi-precious stone for processing in factories. Our ancestors revered jasper as a sacred stone with metaphysical powers, capable of protecting the wearer and giving courage and wisdom.
Amethyst is a purplish variety of quartz , often associated with sub-alkaline basalt rocks, since 3000 BC, in Egypt , South Africa and Mesopotamia , one of the most used gems for the creation of jewelry, seals and carvings. The term derives from the Greek améthystos which means "not drunk".
The Greeks believed it was an excellent remedy for the effects of alcohol and the Romans helped fuel this belief. A particular behavioral etiquette in fact required diners to drink wine in crystal cups every time the guest brought his to his lips. However, he limited himself to drinking pure water in an amethyst chalice, whose violet reflections 'colored' the water giving it the appearance of wine. Thus the guest could remain elegantly sober while his diners succumbed to intoxication.
The opal it's a mineral colloidal amorphous , consisting of silica hydrates : ( SiO 2 n H 2 O), semi-amorphous or microcrystalline , i.e. free of reticular structure , in fact it does not appear in crystals, but in veins, nodules and crusts of various colors, often with iridescence.The color varies from transparent to milky white, with an infinity of different intermediates (green, red, yellow, brown , black). The water content can reach up to 20%. The formation of the opal takes place through a slow geological deposit of a gel colloidal from silica at low temperature.
The word "opal" has root common in Sanskrit ùpala , in Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios is in the Latin opălus (meaning "precious stone").
97% of the world's opal production is in Australia [4] , a country that made it the national stone, especially in the area of Lightning Ridge , where black opal is mined. Important deposits are also located in Mexico and in Ethiopia .
