Sodalite, a blue-gray color with white streaks of feldspar , is easily distinguishable from lapis lazuli because of its shade of blue that tends to gray, the absence of pyrite and the decidedly lower value. Sodalite is a sodium silicate (hence the name) and is widely used for inlay work, objects and cabochon cut stones, it was also called Princess Blue by the Canadians in honor of a visit by the British royals to Canada. It is a usually opaque stone, although there are rare exceptions, and it is extremely rare to find it in a crystalline form.

The mineral comes mainly from South Africa and is appreciated for its particularity.
